hi
I apologize to anyone who may have gone to Albany this evening expecting to see me play at the Anti Fracking show with Natalie Merchant. Unforeseen circumstances in motherhood have made it impossible. I hope that all who attended the very important show will go home with more awareness and understanding of how seriously bad Fracking is. Gov Coumo has to stop it now!

Tonight’s rehearsal for the Albany show was fun. It’s a show raising awareness about Fracking and how terrible it is. We are trying to get governor Cuomo to ban it in NY state. Natalie Merchant is making a documentary about this, using this concert as her starting off point.
Tonight in the High Meadow High School gymnasium played Meshell Ndegeocello, Natalie Merchant, John Sebastian, John Medeski, Feliz Brothers, Jerry Marotta, Simi Stone and many others all collaborating on songs by Talking Heads, Sly and The Family Stone, Pete Seeger, etc. I’ll be playing a new tune called Black Tears with Medeski on keys, Marotta on drums, Sebastian on guitar, Stone on violin and
vocals. It sounded great and can’t wait to share it tomorrow. It’ll be a moving event.
Films will be presented about fracking and a personal message from Pete Seeger to Gov Cuomo. It’s so very frightening what fracking can do. I suggest we all read up on it and do all that we can to stop it from happening in NY state and beyond.

it’s a beautiful rainy spring morning in Brooklyn. The trees are filling up with green. Its not cold, it’s comfortable. That is, if you like the rain. I sure do. It takes me back to my home, Eugene Oregon. I am 14, I am wearing my new Essential Oil cucumber scent, I am riding my bicycle to school, a three mile ride beginning at the Amazon Creek. Why did they call it Amazon? It’s not an impressive tributary. I don’t even know if it’s a creek. It couldn’t be a river could it? My river was the Willamette. For some reason, my fondest memories are from around age 14 and now I see myself floating in an innertube down the Willamette. Im guessing that the age 14 has a strong place holder in my memory because it was when I was coming into my own person. I wanted so much to be independent, and I’d risk getting into a lot of trouble for it. I wasn’t smart about it. It was messy. I lied a lot. I lied to my parents, I lied to my violin teacher, and I was really surprised when a “friend” called me out and told me that I was insecure. It was a tough and beautiful time. I started claiming bands and types of music, covering my army jacket with pins of The Specials and the Sex Pistols. The cucumber scent wades through the memories. The Eugene springtime with all of it’s green beauty is my home inside my heart. That is where I came to be. That is where I struggled and that is where I thrived. I am now backstage at the Hult Center, still age 14, and I’m warming up my voice for the upcoming performance of My Fair Lady. I am staring at a wall, pretending it’s the audience when I realized I had a calling. I felt a passion swell up inside of me and I made a promise to myself that I’d live somewhere and share my passion for music and performing on stage in a place beyond Eugene. I pictured New York City. I imagined Broadway. I wanted a bigger life. Eugene is my seedling. LA was my planting. Boston was my budswell. New York City is my blossom. And now the sun is shining.

Monday night I will play at the Rockwood Music Hall (8 pm, second stage) in NYC. It will be my first real show since becoming a mother of a toddler.

Since Selman’s arrival I haven’t had much time for my music. It’s a different type of creativity. Anything musical is coming spontaneously, with Selman, creating rhythms and songs on the spot. We have been LISTENING to a lot of good music. Selman has great taste. We listen to Al Green, The Clash, and Erik Satie. He definitely likes to rock out. Even when we listen to the French composer Erik Satie he bangs his head to the sudden loud parts (did you know Erik Satie has sudden rockin’ loud parts?). When Selman sits at the piano bench he points to the place next to him and says “dit dee” which means “sit here”. So I sit next to him and we play.

I have a lot of material from the months before Selman’s arrival. Those were heavy times. We thought we were going to lose him due to so many complications and red tape with the adoption. We were unsure of anything. I wrote a lot during this time. You will hear some of these songs at Rockwood, plus new songs that are about family.

This show is a workshop show. I am told, by people close to me, to not be so honest in letting my guard down admitting things like this. But I can’t help it. I have had many years of being polished and professional and on top of it all. It’s all a process. I will be that again someday. There is a beauty in letting people in…

only so far.
